Seoul, August 3, 2026 – South Korea’s economy delivered a powerful signal of resilience in July 2026, as exports surged to $98.89 billion, marking a 62.8 percent increase compared to the same month last year.

The surge was driven primarily by semiconductors, which have become the backbone of the nation’s trade performance in the era of artificial intelligence.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, July’s export figure was the second highest ever recorded, just below June’s $102.25 billion.

Imports also rose sharply, climbing 26.5 percent to $68.56 billion, leaving South Korea with a healthy trade surplus of $30.32 billion.

Semiconductors were the standout performer, with shipments reaching $41.01 billion, a staggering 179 percent increase year on year.

This marks the second consecutive month that chip exports exceeded $40 billion, underscoring the global demand for memory chips and processors essential to AI systems.

Industry analysts note that rising memory chip prices, despite supply concerns, have further boosted export values.

Computers also saw extraordinary growth, with exports soaring 404 percent to $4.79 billion.

Much of this demand came from U.S. technology giants investing heavily in AI infrastructure.

Wireless devices contributed $1.81 billion, up 51 percent, while displays added $1.61 billion, a modest 2.4 percent increase, supported by exclusive supply deals for Apple’s iPhone Ultra.

Automobiles rose 7 percent to $6.24 billion, with eco friendly models offsetting declines in conventional vehicles.

Petroleum products also played a role, with values climbing 34.1 percent amid elevated global oil prices linked to Middle East tensions.

Regionally, South Korea’s exports expanded across nearly all major markets.

Shipments to China surged 96 percent to $21.68 billion, while exports to the United States rose 69 percent to $17.43 billion.

ASEAN markets absorbed $18.8 billion worth of goods, up 73.7 percent, and exports to the European Union climbed 55.7 percent to $9.38 billion.

Even the Middle East, which had experienced months of decline, rebounded with a 24.7 percent increase.

The export boom coincided with stellar corporate earnings.

Samsung Electronics reported a 250-fold jump in chip profits, while SK Hynix posted strong results despite investor caution.

Yet, the domestic stock market reflected volatility the KOSPI index fell 22 percent in July amid concerns about the sustainability of AI related spending, before rebounding on renewed optimism in semiconductors.

Despite the upbeat figures, risks remain. Apple’s potential adoption of Chinese memory chips and China’s rollout of new AI models could reshape demand dynamics.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to pressure energy markets, raising costs for petrochemical exports.

Analysts caution that while July’s surge reflects extraordinary demand, the pace may slow if global AI investment cycles stabilize.

Still, the July performance highlights South Korea’s resilience and adaptability in a shifting global economy.

With semiconductors and AI related products at the forefront, the country has positioned itself as a critical supplier in the next wave of technological transformation.
