Kuala Lumpur, August 3, 2026 – Malaysia’s largest lender, Maybank, has announced a landmark acquisition that will reshape its insurance and takaful operations across Southeast Asia.
The bank will purchase Belgian insurer Ageas’ 30.95% stake in Etiqa for RM4.83 billion (USD 1.18 billion), cementing full ownership of its insurance arm.
The deal, adjusted for an RM800 million dividend payout, underscores Maybank’s ambition to expand its footprint in the region’s fast growing insurance market.
The transaction, funded through a mix of internal resources and external financing, is subject to regulatory approval from Bank Negara Malaysia.

Maybank Investment Bank and Morgan Stanley Asia (Singapore) are advising on the deal.
Once completed, Maybank will hold 100% of Maybank Ageas Holdings Bhd (MAHB), the parent company of Etiqa.
Etiqa, a household name in Malaysia and Singapore, offers a wide portfolio of conventional life and general insurance alongside Shariah compliant takaful products.
Ageas, which first entered Malaysia in 2001 and expanded into Singapore in 2014, is now retreating from Southeast Asia as part of a broader strategic shift.
For Maybank, the acquisition is more than a consolidation it is a springboard for regional expansion.
President and Group CEO Khairussaleh Ramli described the deal as “an important milestone in charting the insurance and takaful business’ next growth phase across Southeast Asia.”
He emphasized that Maybank will continue investing in digital innovation, aiming to boost productivity, reduce costs, and enhance customer experience.
Financially, the acquisition is expected to deliver immediate accretion to profit after tax, earnings per share (EPS), and return on equity (ROE).
Analysts note that the valuation multiples price-to-book at 1.98x and price-to-earnings at 15.3x reflect strong confidence in Etiqa’s growth trajectory.
The deal also enhances Maybank’s capital efficiency, strengthening its dividend capacity and long-term shareholder value.
The move positions Maybank as a national insurance and takaful champion, leveraging its extensive banking network to deepen integration between financial services.
Full ownership allows the bank to align insurance operations more closely with its regional strategy, particularly in markets like Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam, where demand for both conventional and Islamic insurance products is rising.
Investor sentiment has remained stable following the announcement, signaling confidence in Maybank’s capital management and growth strategy.
Market observers suggest that the deal could prompt competitive responses from regional rivals such as CIMB and DBS, who are also expanding their bancassurance footprints.
Ultimately, Maybank’s acquisition of Ageas’ stake in Etiqa reflects a broader trend of consolidation in Southeast Asia’s financial services sector.
As banks seek to scale insurance operations amid shifting demographics and rising middle class demand, Maybank’s decisive move positions it at the forefront of regional insurance growth.
