Texas, September 8, 2026 – The Bitcoin linked Liquid Network has been rocked by one of the largest crypto breaches of the year, with hackers siphoning off nearly US$320 million in digital assets.
The incident, disclosed on September 7, has forced the platform to suspend transactions and reignited concerns about the fragility of blockchain infrastructure.
Liquid, a sidechain developed by Blockstream in 2018, was designed to ease congestion on the Bitcoin main chain by enabling faster settlements.
It is widely used by more than 80 exchanges and asset managers, including Bitfinex, BTSE, and BitMEX.

But the hack drained 95 percent of its reserves, exposing vulnerabilities in the federated model that underpins the system.
According to Liquid, attackers withdrew roughly 4,000 of 4,200 bitcoins through SideSwap, a settlement platform authorized to handle transfers.
The breach appears to have exploited a bug that allowed unauthorized minting of Liquid Bitcoin (L BTC), effectively bypassing the network’s validation safeguards.
Aneirin Flynn, chief executive of FailSafe, described the attack as “a systemic failure in the federation’s security assumptions.”
The hackers, who have styled themselves as “white-hat” actors, claimed they may return the stolen funds for a fee.
Yet such assurances have done little to calm investors, who remain wary after a string of high-profile crypto thefts in recent months.
Just last week, a lending platform linked to Crypto.com lost US$6 million, while in August, Coldcard an offline Bitcoin wallet was compromised, undermining confidence in supposedly secure storage methods.
The Liquid breach underscores the growing risks of centralization in blockchain systems.
While federated sidechains promise efficiency, they also create single points of failure.
“This is the paradox of crypto,” said one analyst. “The more you try to streamline transactions, the more you expose yourself to concentrated risk.”
For regulators, the hack is likely to intensify calls for stricter oversight of crypto infrastructure, particularly in Asia where Liquid has strong adoption.
The incident also raises questions about whether Bitcoin’s broader ecosystem can withstand repeated shocks without eroding trust among institutional investors.
Market reaction has been muted so far, with Bitcoin prices holding steady.
But analysts warn that confidence could falter if stolen funds are not recovered.
The episode highlights the uneasy balance between innovation and security in digital finance a balance that remains precarious as hackers continue to probe the weakest links in the system.
