UEA – Abu Dhabi has unveiled plans for a $1.7 billion entertainment venue, Sphere Abu Dhabi, marking the first international expansion of the immersive Sphere concept beyond the United States.

The project, slated for completion in 2029, is positioned as a cornerstone of the emirate’s long-term economic diversification strategy, aiming to transform Yas Island into a global hub for tourism and live entertainment.

A Landmark Investment in Entertainment

The venue will rise between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, with a seating capacity of up to 20,000 spectators.

Designed to host concerts, sporting events, conferences, and product launches, Sphere Abu Dhabi promises to deliver cutting-edge immersive experiences through advanced audio-visual technology.

The project is a collaboration between the Department of Culture and Tourism  Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Sphere Entertainment Co., the company behind the Las Vegas Sphere, which opened in 2023.

Tourism Strategy 2030

Abu Dhabi’s leadership has made clear that the Sphere is not just an entertainment venue but a strategic investment in the emirate’s future.

The government’s Tourism Strategy 2030 sets ambitious targets 39.3 million visitors annually by 2030, 90 billion AED ($24.5 billion) contribution to GDP from tourism.

Expansion of cultural and entertainment offerings to reduce reliance on oil revenues.

Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to play a pivotal role in achieving these goals, drawing international visitors and reinforcing the emirate’s reputation as a premier destination for global events.

Cultural Diplomacy and Local Identity

Beyond its economic impact, Sphere Abu Dhabi will serve as a cultural showcase. The venue’s LED exterior will feature Emirati artwork, while immersive productions will highlight the nation’s heritage.

This dual focus global entertainment and local identity underscores Abu Dhabi’s ambition to position itself as both a modern entertainment capital and a guardian of tradition.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi “Sphere Abu Dhabi is a powerful demonstration of our long-term commitment. It will draw communities, visitors, creators, and investors for decades to come.”

James L. Dolan, CEO of Sphere Entertainment “Abu Dhabi is a natural home for the next Sphere venue. This is the first step toward building a truly global network of immersive venues.”

The Las Vegas Sphere, which cost $2.3 billion and seats 18,600, has already become a landmark for immersive entertainment.

Abu Dhabi’s version will surpass it in capacity and integrate cultural programming unique to the region.

Sphere Abu Dhabi represents more than a venue it is a statement of intent.

By investing in world class entertainment infrastructure, Abu Dhabi is signaling its determination to diversify its economy, attract global audiences, and cement its place on the cultural map.

As construction begins, the emirate’s challenge will be to balance its ambitious tourism targets with the preservation of local identity, ensuring that Sphere Abu Dhabi becomes not just a spectacle, but a symbol of sustainable growth.
