Seoul, September 14, 2026 – Hyundai Motor Group has pushed back the launch of its proprietary driver sssistance software, known as Atria, to late 2029, marking a significant delay from its original 2027 target.
The decision highlights the mounting challenges automakers face in developing advanced autonomous systems while racing against Tesla and Chinese competitors.
In the interim, Hyundai will rely on Nvidia’s Hyperion 10 platform, deploying advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in 2028.
These systems will cover Level 2+ and Level 2++ capabilities, enabling enhanced highway and urban driving support.

The move reflects a pragmatic shift in strategy, as Hyundai seeks to accelerate rollout while continuing to refine its in house technology.
The leadership transition has played a pivotal role in this change.
Park Min woo, a former Nvidia executive now heading Hyundai’s software division, has emphasized the importance of balancing internal development with external partnerships.
His predecessor had prioritized building Atria entirely in house, but Park’s approach underscores the urgency of keeping pace with global rivals.
Hyundai’s sensor strategy also signals a cost-conscious approach.
The company plans to avoid expensive lidar sensors in its initial rollout, relying instead on cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors.
Lidar may be introduced later for Level 3 autonomy, which allows hands off driving under specific conditions.
Park stressed that redundancy across sensors is critical to ensuring safety, particularly in scenarios where one system may fail.
Despite the delay, Hyundai believes its scale will provide a long-term advantage.
With Hyundai and Kia producing more than seven million vehicles annually, the automaker expects to surpass competitors in accumulated driving data by 2033.
This data is seen as a crucial asset in refining autonomous systems and ensuring reliability across diverse driving environments.

Tesla continues to lead with its Full Self Driving system, which relies on a camera-based approach and is already deployed in urban and highway settings.
