Indiana, August 29, 2026 – South Korea’s SK Hynix has officially begun construction of a $5 billion advanced memory packaging facility in West Lafayette, Indiana, a landmark investment that underscores both the company’s ambitions in artificial intelligence and Washington’s push to secure domestic semiconductor supply chains.
The project, spanning 54 hectares, represents SK Hynix’s first U.S. base for high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a critical component in AI acceleration systems.
The facility is scheduled to open its cleanroom by October 2028, with mass production expected to commence in late 2029.
The company projects the creation of roughly 7,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction and operations, alongside 1,000 permanent positions once the hub is fully operational.

The Biden administration has pledged significant support through the Chips and Science Act, offering up to $458 million in direct subsidies and $500 million in loans.
This backing reflects Washington’s determination to reduce reliance on overseas chip production and to strengthen national security by localizing advanced packaging capabilities a weak link in America’s semiconductor ecosystem.
SK Hynix plans to ship wafers produced in South Korea to Indiana, where they will undergo packaging and testing.
This vertical stacking process, central to HBM technology, dramatically boosts performance and efficiency, making it indispensable for companies like Nvidia that dominate the AI hardware market.
The Indiana hub also carries symbolic weight. SK Hynix has pledged to provide employment opportunities for veterans of the U.S.
Forces Korea, reinforcing historical ties between South Korea and Indiana, a state that played a notable role during the Korean War.
In addition, the company will collaborate with Purdue University to advance research in packaging and system integration, ensuring a pipeline of talent and innovation.
Globally, SK Hynix has surged to become South Korea’s second most valuable company, trailing only Samsung Electronics, thanks to booming demand for HBM chips.
Yet challenges remain. The semiconductor industry is notoriously cyclical, and while AI driven growth has propelled valuations, sustainability is uncertain.
Execution risks ranging from infrastructure rollout to supply chain coordination could delay production.
Moreover, SK Hynix faces fierce competition from rivals such as Micron and Samsung, both racing to dominate the next generation of memory technologies.
Still, the Indiana project signals a strategic bet on the future of AI and advanced computing.
